일두(一蠹) 홍보관

 

 

정여창 고택 입구에 일두 홍보관이 얼마 전 새로 들어섰다. 정여창 선생의 생애와 업적 등을 설명해주는 내용이 잘 정리되어 있어 무척 유익했다. 전시되어 있는 내용을 유심히 살펴보고 홍보관에 머물고 있는 해설사분께 이것저것 물어보니 귀찮아 하기는 커녕 오히려 많은 관심을 가져주는 것에 고마워하면서 시간이 얼마나 있으시냐고 물었다. 오늘 이곳이 마지막 일정이어서 시간은 충분하다고 하니 친절한 미소를 지으며 의자에 편히 앉으라고 하며 정여창 선생에 대한 많은 이야기를 1시간가량 상세히 설명해주었다. 덕분에 그 분에 대해 많은 것을 새롭게 알게 되었다.

 

피상적으로만 알았던 정여창 선생에 대한 이야기를 부분적이나마 상세하게 알고 나서는 중요한 사실을 지금에서야 알게 된 것이 미안하고 송구스러울 뿐이었다. 정여창 선생에 대해서는 나중에 별도로 정리할 기회가 있겠지만 가장 인상적이었던 내용을 전달 드리고 싶다. 일두(一蠹) 라는 호에 담긴 뜻이 깊었다. 한 마리 좀 벌레라는 의미가 담긴 한자어인데 정여창 선생이 스스로를 일두 라고 지은 배경을 알고 나서는 새삼 그를 다시 보게 되었고 옛 선조 분들의 위대한 생각을 다시금 새기게 되었다.

 

당상관 이상의 고위직 벼슬을 한 사람도 살아가려면 수많은 것들을 남에게 의지하며 살아가야 하는 법임에도 그것을 대수롭지 않게 여기며 사는 경우가 많은데 그는 달랐다. 농부, 상공인들 그리고 집안의 일꾼들이 없으면 본인을 비롯한 가족들도 지금의 생활을 영위 할 수 없고 편하게 살아갈 수도 없다는 것을 늦게나마 깨닫고는 스스로를 좀 벌레에 비유하였다. 일반 서민 대중들에게 크게 직접적으로 해준 것도 없이 받기만하고 살아가는 한 마리의 좀 벌레와 같은 존재와 다름없다고 자신을 비유했다.

 

지극히 겸손한 태도였지만 곰곰이 생각해보면 일리가 있는 듯했다. 나 자신을 비롯해 오늘날 돈 많고 고위직에 있으며 잘나가는 사람들도 농사짓는 농업인과 소상공인 등 무수히 많은 분들의 도움과 헌신이 없다면 지금의 삶을 어찌 영위할 수 있을까? 지금 생각해도 무릎을 치게 만드는 생각이 아닌가 싶었다. “ 너 자신을 알라”는 소크라테스의 일침이 새삼 떠올랐다.

 

늦었지만 일두 정여창 선생, 그를 알게 된 것이 이번 함양 여행의 가장 큰 수확이 아닐까 싶었다. 그의 생애와 사상에 대해서 좀 더 공부를 해보고 싶다는 생각이 불현 듯 솟았다. 그의 사상을 되돌아보고 스스로를 낮추는 겸양지도(謙讓之道)를 배우고 실천하는 삶이 나이 들어갈수록 더욱 필요 하겠다는 생각과 동시에 그를 조금이라도 닮고자 노력해야겠다는 생각까지 마음속에 일었다.

### PR Center of Ildu

 

A new PR Center dedicated to Ildu (일두) has recently been established at the entrance of the old house of Jeong Yeo-chang. The center offers well-organized information on the life and achievements of Jeong Yeo-chang, making it extremely beneficial for visitors. After carefully examining the exhibits and asking the guide various questions, the guide did not seem bothered but rather grateful for the interest shown. She asked how much time I had. When I mentioned that this was my last stop for the day and I had plenty of time, she kindly invited me to sit comfortably and spent about an hour explaining many details about Jeong Yeo-chang's life. Thanks to her, I learned a lot of new information about him.

 

Gaining detailed knowledge, even partially, about Jeong Yeo-chang, whom I previously knew only superficially, made me feel somewhat regretful and sorry for not having learned these important facts earlier. Although I hope to have another opportunity to organize and share more about Jeong Yeo-chang in the future, I want to convey the most impressive aspect that struck me. The meaning embedded in his pen name, Ildu (一蠹), is profound. The Chinese characters translate to "one moth," and knowing the background of why Jeong Yeo-chang chose this name gave me a newfound respect for him and a deeper appreciation for the great thoughts of our ancestors.

 

Despite holding high-ranking positions, he realized that he, like everyone else, relied on many others to live, often without giving it much thought. Unlike others, he recognized this dependency late in life and likened himself to a moth. He considered himself no different from a moth that lives by consuming without directly contributing much to the general populace. This extremely humble attitude, upon reflection, seemed quite reasonable. How can affluent and high-ranking people today, including myself, sustain their lives without the help and dedication of countless farmers, small business owners, and many others? This thought still strikes me as a profound realization, reminiscent of Socrates' admonition, "Know thyself."

 

Realizing the significance of Ildu Jeong Yeo-chang, albeit late, was perhaps the greatest takeaway from this trip to Hamyang. A sudden desire to study more about his life and philosophy emerged. Reflecting on his thoughts and learning to live a humble life seem increasingly necessary as I age, alongside a growing determination to emulate him even slightly.
